Everything you need to know about breast lift: techniques, costs, and recovery

Breast lift, or mastopexy, is a cosmetic surgery procedure that consists of lifting and tightening the breasts by removing excess skin and reshaping breast tissue. The surgeon adjusts the position of the breast and nipple, restoring a natural contour to sagging breasts (breast ptosis) without changing their volume. This procedure can be combined with implants if increased volume is also desired.

How much does a breast lift cost by country?

The cost of a breast lift varies according to the country, technique used, the surgeon’s fees, and clinic-related charges. Below is a table summarizing the average prices seen in 2025 in different countries for the main methods.

Breast lift: coverage and reimbursement

Breast lifts are generally not covered by National Health Insurance nor by private insurers, as it is considered a cosmetic procedure. Exceptional coverage may be considered only if ptosis results from a proven medical condition or reconstructive surgery after cancer.

Objectives, techniques and associated procedures

The main objectives of a breast lift are to correct breast ptosis, improve breast symmetry, restore a harmonious contour, and reposition the areolas. Depending on the case, it may be an isolated procedure or combined with other breast surgeries:

Recent technical advances in breast lift

In recent years, breast lifts have benefited from several technological and methodological advances:

  • Refined reduced-scar techniques (vertical or periareolar scar)
  • Use of stronger internal sutures for longer-lasting support
  • Preoperative 3D planning to predict and visualize the result
  • Possible combinations with lipofilling for a natural outcome
  • Development of form-stable implants for combination cases
  • Improved anesthesia management and rapid recovery protocols
  • Minimally invasive techniques aimed at reducing pain and recovery duration

Stages of the operation: from the operating theatre to recovery

The breast lift is performed in the operating theatre under general anaesthetic. After disinfection and sterile preparation, the surgeon begins by drawing the necessary skin markings, depending on the correction to be made and the technique chosen (inverted T, vertical or peri-areolar scar).

An incision is made along these markings. The surgeon then removes the excess skin under or around the areola, and reshapes the mammary gland to obtain a firmer, more shapely shape. The areola and nipple are repositioned higher, at a consistent and aesthetically pleasing height.

If the facelift is combined with the insertion of implants, this addition is performed at the same operating time, before the incisions are closed. Finally, the skin is re-draped and adjusted, and sutures are applied using absorbable or non-absorbable sutures, depending on the protocol chosen. A compression dressing is put in place as well as a support bra.

How long does a breast lift last?

The duration of a breast lift varies according to the complexity of the correction to be made and the possible addition of an implant. On average, the operation lasts between 1h30 and 3 hours in the operating theatre.

Outpatient hospitalisation is often possible if there are no complex associated procedures; otherwise, an overnight stay in hospital may be proposed for monitoring.

Surgical after-effects: what to expect

A breast lift is not a procedure known to be very painful. The post-operative period generally involves moderate discomfort and a feeling of tension, especially during the first few days.

Taking standard painkillers effectively controls the pain. True acute pain is rare, and most patients can return to light activity after a few days, subject to the surgeon’s advice.

Breast lift: results, scars and progression

Postoperative follow-up after a breast lift is essential to ensure the quality and durability of the outcome. Understanding the different steps of recovery, the evolution of effects, and identifying possible complications makes it easier to approach the period after surgery with peace of mind.

Here are the key points to know about breast lift results, their evolution, possible sensitivities, and risk prevention.

When to observe the final result after surgery?

Immediately after surgery, the breasts often appear higher, firmer, and may be swollen. These effects are normal and gradually diminish.

The results begin to take shape once swelling subsides, usually after 4 to 6 weeks. The final contour and the appearance of scars refine over several months. The result is generally considered stable between 6 and 12 months after the procedure, once the skin and breast tissue regain their suppleness and the scars mature.

Long-term outcome and influencing factors

A breast lift offers a lasting result but does not stop the natural aging process. The lifted effect can persist for about ten years, sometimes longer, provided a healthy lifestyle is maintained.

Factors such as skin quality, stable weight, pregnancy, or hormonal fluctuations can eventually impact the outcome. If a new ptosis appears, a touch-up can be considered based on the surgeon’s advice.

Pain, swelling, and scar management

Mild to moderate pain, as well as a sensation of tension, are common in the first days. Swelling, bruising, and numbness in the breasts usually resolve within 2 to 4 weeks.

Scars are initially red and visible, then gradually fade over 12 to 18 months. It’s important to follow the surgeon’s recommendations for scar care, avoid sun exposure, and use special creams or appropriate dressings if necessary.

Postoperative risks: advice and prevention

As with any surgery, breast lifts are not without risks. The main complications are rare but may include infection, healing problems, hematoma, decreased sensitivity, or persistent asymmetry.

To minimize these risks, it is essential to choose a qualified surgeon, strictly follow postoperative instructions, and avoid smoking, which impairs healing. Good communication with the medical team also helps detect any abnormality early. No surgical result is 100% guaranteed; having an open conversation with the practitioner beforehand helps to understand what is realistic and to tailor expectations accordingly.
